Images I Admire: Photographic Paintings by Karel Funk

Karel Funk painting

Well, friends, I’ve been a bit sporadic with my blogging the past few days. My mother was in town visiting, and I was also suddently swamped with work (which is a good thing!). I’m still catching up!

While my mother was in town, we visited the Dallas Museum of Art and saw a great contemporary art exhibit. There was only one painting by Karel Funk, but I’ve seen a few others a couple years ago. They really made an impression.

He takes pictures of friends and paints them — something artists have done for years. However, Funk paints his subjects from the side or back so you can’t see their faces at all. I think it’s really intriguing.

I also think his technical skill is amazing. He uses acrylic glazes, layering and layering and layering until the paintings have a stark, realistic, photographic quality.
